Essiac tea and Red Clover: Must-Read Information
What you NEED to know about isoflavones and estrogen in regards to Essiac tea and Red Clover
It's important that you read this article about Essiac tea and red clover before you make a decision on whether or not to try Essiac. There are a lot of articles out there saying various things about red clover and Essiac tea, and we want to make sure you consume this information from an accurate source.
Red clover is one of the herbs found in Essiac Tea, and it's a rich source of isoflavones. Isoflavones are an important part of a healthy diet, and this medical expert can explain why.
Learn About the Power of Isoflavones
According to Gregory Burke, MD, Isoflavones are compounds that mimic the beneficial effects of estrogen, but with less risks. This is because estrogen-replacement therapy raises the risk of breast and ovarian cancer, but isoflavones found in the diet such as those found in soy do not (Dr. Burke is the professor and director of public health sciences at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina).
In addition, here is an article from the Mayo Clinic mentioning how isoflavones in food such as soy are not sufficient to cause breast cancer, and in fact a lifelong diet including such foods actually reduces breast cancer: Read the article from the Mayo Clinic (Red clover is an herb, which is considered a food).
The Specific Isoflavone Called Genistein Offers Benefit to the Body
The concentration of Genistein, which is the phytochemical in red clover inhibits the estrogen receptors in tumors, making the endogenous estrogen unable to compete with said receptors and make them grow. In this way red clover can be protective. It's true that in certain quantities and concentrations red clover can be harmful, but that is not the case with Genuine Essiac. You are receiving an appropriate level. Think about sodium as an example - your body needs some sodium each day to be healthy. It's only when an excess amount is consumed that you could experience issues. The same can be said for red clover. The appropriate amount provides the efficacy we are all after.

Learn what would happen if we took the red clover out of our Essiac tea formula.
The first problem with taking red clover out is that herbs in Essiac tea function in a synergistic manner. In other words, when the herbs in Essiac are taken together in the specific ratio, they have a different effect in the body than they would have if they were taken one herb at a time. This means that each and every herb in the formula is important, and you can't just take one out and expect it to do the same job.
Furthermore, the amount of red clover included in the formula is exceedingly small because that is all the body needs to gain the appropriate benefit. Many practitioners spread myths about Essiac Tea that you're best off using a blend that has the red clover removed. However, most of these well-intentioned folks are either not trained in herbs or they are not aware of how tiny the amount of red clover is in this formula. Blanket statements that red clover should not be consumed are not fair when considering how small the portions are, and that the herb functions in this case as a small component of a larger formula.
Going back to the sodium example for a minute - think about how silly it would be to tell a heart patient not eat celery because it contains sodium. One celery stalk has 30 mg of sodium, and most adults have a recommendation of 2000 mg of sodium per day. This doesn't mean you shouldn't ever eat celery as a heart patient! In fact, produce is one of the best things for health. You see, it's not just about what something has - it's how much it has of it, and the source of it (natural sodium present in vegetables is better for you than table salt, for example).
There is no reason to avoid Genuine Essiac if you are suffering from estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer

I am not concerned about the red clover in the tea. If it works synergistic with the other ingredients it should be left in. Thx for the information.
Hi JoAnn,
The tea keeps for 2 years when stored away from sources of direct heat or sunlight.
Gina
Red Clover does not concern me. Thank you though for the information so people are aware and can make choices. I agree with you. You cannot remove red clover. It is synergistic with the other ingredients.
Does the essiac tea lose its potency over time if I haven’t used it in months?
Thanks for the valuable information. And I had just reordered some before this email came out.
