Empty Stomach Rules for Essiac Tea - A Complete Guide
As you have probably seen on the Genuine Essiac™ tea labels, as well as in the brochure and on the website, you are allowed to have the following items during the empty stomach time:
- unsweetened fruit or vegetable juice
- stevia
- black coffee or tea
- lemon juice
It's not an exhaustive list, as there is only so much room to list words on printed material.
However, the idea is to give you examples of the types of things that count as "empty stomach."
To add further clarification, I want to add to this list in a more complete way.
Keep reading for all the other things you can have at any time, whether it be along with Essiac, mixed with Essiac, or anytime during the fasting window before or after your Essiac. As a reminder, no food 2 hour before you take your Essiac, and no food 1 hour after you take your Essiac.

Here is a very comprehensive list of what you can have during the empty stomach time for beverages and sweeteners:
- unlimited amounts of water
- unsweetened fruit or vegetable juice
- stevia
- seltzer
- mineral water
- monk fruit
- xylitol
- black coffee
- black tea
- ginger tea (this can be extra helpful if you struggle with nausea)
- herbal tea
- kombucha
- lemon juice (this one also can help if you battle with nausea)
- lime juice
- apple cider vinegar
- honey (although it's challenging to have it mix with the cold Essiac, and Essiac should be taken cold)

Wondering why you need to take Essiac tea cold?
It's because you have already brewed the Essiac once. Heating it a second time degrades the medicinal compounds in the tea. If you cannot drink cold liquids, you may allow it to warm to room temperature before consuming it or add warm water to your serving. Learn how much Essiac tea to take at once here.
Here is what else you can have or take during the empty stomach time besides food:
- any prescription medication, including those that say to take them on an empty stomach (because Essiac counts as having an empty stomach).
- any supplement that does not contain protein (so no amino acids and no protein powders). You may have your amino acids 20 minutes apart from Essiac. Treat your protein powders like food (avoid them 2 hours before Essiac and one hour after).
- any supplement that states it must be taken on an empty stomach.
Once you decide on your favorite way to take your Essiac tea, it's a snap!
Most people ultimately decide to take it straight after they begin to grow accustomed to the taste. That will keep it super easy once you get to that point.
Keep in mind, if your Essiac doesn't taste a little bit bitter, it's not real Essiac.
Never shop Essiac based on taste. Many companies change the ratios of herbs to modify taste, but obviously that is a huge mistake when it comes to your health. Visit this page for more ideas on how to improve the taste of Essiac tea, including a video.
It's 100% normal for Essiac to vary somewhat in taste throughout the seasons when it's organic and free of preservatives.
You can learn more about that here. This means there may be one batch that you want to add something to modify the taste and other batches that you don't. That's normal.
SUMMARY
There is a long list of things you can add to Essiac tea to change the taste and still have it be considered to be on an empty stomach. The most popular things to add are: lemon juice, stevia, and unsweetened fruit or vegetable juice.
