Find Out Why Interpreting PSA Measurements is so Complex

SUMMARY

While PSA is an important marker of health, that test result alone doesn't paint the full picture of your overall health and a high PSA test result isn't always indicative of cancer.

Did You Know that PSA can fluctuate wildly from hour to hour?

If you are looking to track your PSA, it's important that you understand how wildly it can fluctuate within one day. That means that you could test, for example, at 2 at 8am and then find it's down to 1.5 by 10am, but if you took it again at 12pm it might be at 2.25. These numbers are examples only, but they help explain the faults when taking one number as a snapshot in time. Check out this customer of ours' experience with fluctuating PSAs, but that he ultimately ended up in a great spot. You can watch his Genuine Essiac testimonial here.

Because of this randomization of how the numbers will come back from testing, it's very tricky to measure a trend when you only take one sample every few months, or maybe even every 6 months to a year! If you happen to measure at a moment when it was lower than usual for one measurement and then by the second measurement you happen to measure at a moment when it's higher than usual, you might think your PSA overall has elevated. However, in that instance it's still possible that your average PSA (if you had more data points) would have dropped. It's hard to know without more data points.1

Did you know that PSA can be elevated for reasons other than cancer?

PSA is elevated not only during tumor growth, but also during many inflammatory processes. One common circumstance where this occurs is with benign prostatic hyperplasia, otherwise known as prostate enlargement. That is why it's best to pair PSA readings with other symptoms and additional bloodwork as well as cancer markers if cancer is your primary concern. Please consult with your medical provider to learn which additional tests might be appropriate for you.

What should I do if my PSA is still elevated after 6 months of using Essiac?

First off, please make sure that you are following empty stomach rules of no food 2 hours before Essiac or 1 hour after, including coffee with milk, cream or sugar.

If you are doing that correctly, please know that we have a number of customers who got better results after 12 months of Essiac as opposed to just the 6. It can't hurt to continue on the path.

Also realize that every customer is different. Some experience dramatic drops in PSA very quickly while others take far longer. There are always those customers who don't see their PSA drop, but they rather hold steady. Keep in mind, when disease processes are left unchecked, they often get worse and worse over time. Sometimes staying stable can still be considered a victory. That being said, you should continue to pursue other means of helping your PSA reduce if a doctor recommends that you lower your PSA. Always consult with a medical professional and follow their advice if you have concerns about your PSA levels.

    • Hi Toni,
For anyone looking to improve their health, you should take at least 3 ounces of Essiac tea three times a day. You have the option to take up to 6 ounces per serving, which is the highest effective amount you can take. Many people take the 6 ounce serving if they are doing chemotherapy or radiation to help reduce their side effects. People with stage 4 often take the 6 ounce serving because of their critical condition. Others choose to take the higher serving of essiac because they feel more is better than less. They would be perfectly fine to take the 3 ounce serving but find comfort in taking extra. We discuss these options in the informational brochure that we send with every order. Yes, you take Essiac on an empty stomach. No food 2 hours before you take your Essiac, and no food 1 hour after you take your Essiac. But space out taking Essiac tea at least 4 hours apart.

    • My husband is on Essiac for prostate cancer..in May 2025 his numbers were rising..he had his prostate out 2019..numbers were rising some yearly. In May he was .024..Dr’s wanted to start a treatment..so in June 2025 he had his first testosterone lowering shot..series of 3 every 3 months..in June I said we need to be more proactive..researched and started on Essiac..2-3 times a day..in early Aug I ordered a good mushroom supplement..I believe it has 6 mushrooms including Turkey Tail and Chaga..he also drinks super greens in the morning…jump ahead to Sept 2025..went in for 2nd testosterone losing shot..PSA first..then see dr..she stated his numbers were undectable..but she still wanted him to have his shot..he said no..he will continue on with Essiac and mushrooms and super greens, retest in Dec..we will see where his numbers are.

    • I’ve used the extract & tea on & off, but I want to start again. Do I drink the tea ( how much is 6 ozs) on empty stomach and with or without meals

    • Hi Andrew,

I am not sure about the science behind your question in regards to the PSA after a radical prostatectomy. That being said, please know that Essiac won’t usually lower PSA until you’ve been on it for at least six months.
