Discover the story behind Rene Caisse and her work with Dr. Charles Brusch. Watch rare documentary footage, explore how the traditional Essiac tea formula was developed, and see why preparation methods—like powdered herbs—remain an important part of its legacy.
We Owe So Much to Rene Caisse Who Spent Her Life Trying to Expand The Use and Availability of Essiac Tea
At the 20:00 mark of the video below you will see Rene Caisse, who was a Canadian nurse, using powdered herbs, the very same ones that we use to make our Genuine Essiac™. Powdered herbs are proven to be superior for absorbability, and Rene Caisse knew it!
At the 22:00 minute mark of this Rene Caisse video, you will see the Doctor who developed this formula. His name is Dr. Charles Brusch and he passed the formula along to us.

How to Rene Caisse Essiac Story First Began
It's important to understand that Essiac was used by Native Americans back long before Rene Caisse even new about it.
Essiac is an old Ojibway formula. Rene Caisse hails from Ontario, a region that was inhabited by the Ojibway. They had used the blend for decades, using grinding stones to pulverize the herbs to prepare the tea.
Rene Caisse first heard about the recipe from elderly patient who was in an Ontario hospital where she worked as head nurse.
The recipe was given to that patient years before by tan Ojibway medicine man. Historical accounts at the time describe that he had offered his help to her at the time because he knew she was suffering with a major health issue. Rene became intrigued and decided that she wanted to go see the Ojibway medicine man herself. The Ojibway medicine man was kind enough to share the formula with Rene and she began putting all of her focus toward Essiac tea.
Rene Caisse had reason to use this recipe two years later on her aunt who was struggling with some significant health issues.
After using Essiac with her aunt, Rene and her aunt's doctor began experimenting with the herbal tea together and began conducting research using mice. The doctor, R.O. Fisher, began giving Essiac to his patients. This information and more is documented in the book The Essiac Report by Richard Thomas.

The Scientific Research on the Essiac Tea formula by Rene Caisse Continued in Canada
Rene and Dr. Fisher began to modify the formula as they proceeded on with their research. One of the things they tested was they injected the sheep sorrel and administered the other herbs orally. This was of note because the Ojibway medicine man and his people never injected anything - they had simply prepared tea and taken it by mouth.
However, Rene had committed to conducting formal research on the formula in hopes that she could improve the tea's efficacy even further. During this research, it was discovered that only one herb could be injected - and that it had to be into the muscle, not into the veins. This was a painful procedure, and many, due to their emaciated state, had hardly any muscles left in order for the injections to be feasible. Rene Caisse attempted to get permission from the Canadian Ministry of Health to give physicians throughout Canada the go-ahead to inject the authentic Essiac formula. Unfortunately, her efforts were not successful.
Rene's Frustrations Mounted
Rene grew frustrated by her research efforts in Canada, which were beset by obstacle after obstacle. Dr. Charles Brusch invited Rene Caisse to the Brusch Medical Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts in an attempt to develop an oral formula that carried the same efficacy level as the injection. In 1959, Rene Caisse ventured to the Brusch Medical Clinic to join him. Dr. Charles Brusch was most well known for being President Kennedy's Personal Physican.

Dr. Brusch Further Developed the Essiac Formula Into What it is Today
Dr. Brusch, who had been President Kennedy's personal physician, had developed an interest in natural methods ago. His objective was always prioritizing the "well-being" of the patient at all costs, which made him a pioneer of sorts in the age of modern medicine. He had been the one to set up the very first acupuncture clinic that existed for research purposes. This clinic was operating right in his medical clinic when Rene Caisse arrived in 1959.
Dr. Brusch was the first doctor in the Western hemisphere to initiate a plan similar to Medicare within his clinic to aid those without money in receiving medical help. He was keenly interested in herbs and in their power to heal, which he first learned about from a long-time friend, a master herbalist based out of Missouri.
The objective at Dr. Brusch's clinic was to learn more about this simple herbal formula. The formula had already been used widely - but Dr. Brusch wanted to do even better and bring more validity to the formula. Rene Caisse and Dr. Brusch began their research on the Essiac using oral treatment only. The reason behind this change of approach was that it is easier to use a tea that is made to drink as opposed to one that requires an injection to administer. By being able to drink the tea, the thought was that it would accessible to more people. No other medication was used and the herbs were given on an empty stomach during testing.
In the hope of identifying the active ingredient, they experimented with variations of solutions to be injected, with each vial containing a different herb. During the process they failed to isolate one single herb as being the difference-maker, but rather concluding that the unique combination of the eight essiac herbs combined in the correct proportions was the way to go. Today, authentic Essiac tea is taken orally in the form of a brewed herbal tea.
Rene and Charles Brusch remained partners, co-developers and co-owners until her death in 1978 at the age of 91. We owe what Essiac is presently today to these two and their work.

SUMMARY
Rene Caisse was the most impactful person in history for bringing forward momentum to the widspread use of Essiac tea. This is because she helped bring Essiac tea to the mainstream and she spent the most time on research of anyone. Rene Caisse Essiac is the gold standard - and Genuine Essiac™ has it!
