Considering Essiac capsules as a convenient option? Learn how capsules differ from traditionally brewed tea, including preparation, absorption, and the role of the steeping process. This guide outlines key factors to help you understand how format may influence your overall experience.
Capsules sound convenient...but here's the truth you won't hear elsewhere.
It makes sense why people ask about Essiac capsules. They seem convenient, quick, and mess-free — a perfect “shortcut” for a busy life. But when it comes to Essiac, shortcuts don’t just save time. They sacrifice results.
At Genuine Essiac®, we’ve stayed committed to one simple truth:
Essiac was designed for us to consume when brewed as a tea.
Capsules may sound appealing, but they fundamentally change what Essiac is and how it behaves in the body. That’s why we don’t offer them — and why we don’t recommend them.
You have never heard of Rene Caisse using or recommending Essiac capsules, and there are 5 reasons for that.
There is no way that a tiny little capsule could have as much benefit as what you get in a 3 oz. cup of tea. In this same way, a veggie capsule is never as good as actually eating a plate of vegetables. Let's explore the various reasons why Rene Caisse didn't recommend Essiac capsules.

1. Essiac is an old Ojibway Indian formula
In Ojibway culture, they considered every commodity and everything in nature to be a gift from God. Because of this, they were sure to use each and every part of every plant and animal they could. They never threw anything away.
When it comes to working with the Essiac herbs, what the Ojibwa did is grind the herbs with grinding stones.
They ground the herbs into a fine powder which they then boiled into a tea. They ground the herbs so fine that they were able to consume them right along with the liquid tea. They didn’t have any colanders or strainers, but they didn’t need them because they didn’t want to waste anything. When you drink the particles along with the Essiac tea, it's kind of like drinking orange juice that includes the pulp. You're getting even more of the good stuff!
2. Essiac Was Designed to Be Brewed — Not Swallowed Dry
The herbs in Essiac aren’t meant to “activate” in capsule form. The steeping process extracts their beneficial components, softens the plant material, and allows the formula to work synergistically, just as the original nurse Rene Caisse intended.
Capsules skip this critical step.
Without brewing, your body simply isn’t receiving Essiac in its complete, traditional, and most effective form. Luckily for you, it’s super simple to make Essiac tea with powdered herbs yourself, just as Rene Caisse used. You can see a video of Rene Caisse working with powdered herbs here.
Capsules shortcut the process — and in doing so, they shortcut the benefits. Including the herb powder in the tea is the best way to take Essiac. We haven't deviated from that original brewing method in all the time since Rene Caisse, simply because it is the most effective way to take Essiac and the way that Rene Caisse did it.

3. Brewing Unlocks the Herbal Synergy That Makes Essiac Unique
Essiac isn’t just a list of herbs — it’s the interaction between them. During brewing, the herbs break down, merge, and infuse into the water, creating a drinkable blend that your body can absorb and utilize efficiently.
A capsule keeps the herbs locked away in dry, static form.
No infusion. No synergy. No full benefit.
4. Capsules Are Convenient — But Convenience Comes at a Cost
We understand the desire for simplicity. But when it comes to Essiac, convenience often means compromise.
-
No steeping = incomplete extraction
-
No liquid = slower absorption
-
No synergy = less effectiveness
If you’re taking Essiac because you genuinely want to support your health, capsules simply don’t offer what you’re looking for.

5. One of the biggest differences between traditional brewed Essiac tea and capsules is the presence of the actual powdered herbs in the tea.
When you prepare Genuine Essiac the traditional way, you consume the brewed tea along with the fine herbal sediment. That natural fiber content is one reason many people prefer the tea over capsules. The tea should have a slightly sludgy consistency, which is why we recommend stirring the herbs before pouring each serving. (You can always dilute your serving with water or natural fruit juice afterward if desired.)
Many people today do not get enough fiber in their daily diets, and fiber plays an important role in supporting normal digestive function and overall wellness. This is one reason we believe keeping the whole powdered herbs in the tea is important.
Straining out the herbs removes much of that natural plant material that has traditionally been part of authentic Essiac tea preparation. That’s also why we do not recommend capsules as a replacement for traditionally prepared Essiac tea made with the full herbal blend.

All you need to do is boil water and add the contents of the packet of Essiac Tea. After brewing it for 10 minutes you can leave the mixture on the stove for 12 hours before storing it in the fridge. Then when it’s time to drink the tea, you simply pour out the amount you need and take it cold. In place of taking a capsule, you take a 3 oz. shot of Essiac tea. You can bring some with you in a thermos with a few ice cubes if you need a serving while you're out and about.

Why We Stay True to the Brewed Formula
Many companies sell Essiac capsules because they’re easier to produce and ship — not because they’re better.
Genuine Essiac® has a different mission.
We are committed to preserving the traditional method because that is the method that has served people for generations. It’s the method that honors the formula’s history. And it’s the method that continues to deliver the best results for our customers today.
Essiac is meant to steep, soften, and transform in water. That’s where the magic happens.
If You Want Real Essiac, Tea is the Only Format That Works Best
Capsules may look modern and convenient, but they don’t do what Essiac is supposed to do. The tea is:
-
More absorbable
-
More authentic
-
More effective
-
More aligned with the original formula
We don’t offer Essiac capsules for one reason:
They don’t give our customers the results they deserve.
If you’re serious about experiencing Essiac as it was intended — without dilution, shortcuts, or compromised potency — the brewed tea is the form you want.
