Essiac Tea Side Effects & Safety: What to Know Before You Start

If you're considering Essiac tea, it makes sense to look into safety and possible side effects first. After all, putting anything new into your body deserves careful thought — especially something you might use daily for months or even years at a time.

Essiac tea has been used traditionally for over 100 years, beginning with Canadian nurse Rene Caisse in the 1920s. Throughout that time, users have generally reported it well-tolerated, though like any herbal preparation, individual responses can vary.

Below, we cover what you need to know before starting: commonly reported side effects, who should consult a healthcare provider first, possible interactions with medications, and safe brewing practices to minimize any unwanted reactions.

Is Essiac Tea Safe?

Essiiac is a traditional herbal tea with a long history of use dating back over a century. It's generally well tolerated by many adults when prepared and consumed as directed. As with any herbal product, individual experiences may vary and some herbs including those in Essiac may interact with medications or certain health conditions. It's not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Consult a qualified healthcare provider before use, especially if pregnant, nursing, taking medications, or managing a medical condition. You may prevent this pdf to your provider when you ask about how it may be compatible with what you use: Ask your provider about Essiac tea.

Research on Essiac tea

The good news is that Essiac Tea has only one reported side effect, and no serious side effects.

The tea is designed to be a slow, gentle experience - not a quick fix. Because of that, it tends to be very well tolerated. This isn't the type of product that typically causes herx reactions. See a study highlighting the general overall safety of eight herb Essiac tea (1).

The only side effect associated with eight herb Essiac is an increased frequency of needing to use the bathroom. You may think of it as diarrhea or a bit of cramping, but it is typically not out of control and will not stop you from continuing on with your usual activities. This actually becomes a desired effect for most because it's part of how the tea works. This is not going to be uncomfortable for the average person and is generally beneficial to the body as it will happen for those who could use a gentle purging. Normally this Essiac tea side effect lasts a few days at the longest. Your body will finally eliminate anything that should not be inside of you any longer. What great news!

If this Essiac tea side effect of increased need to use the bathroom or some diarrhea is bothersome to you, feel free to build up to the usual serving size rather than starting with the full serving right away. You may experience mild cramping as your body purges. Keep in mind that you should not start your official clock measuring how long you've been on Essiac until you have built up to the recommended amounts and are using them consistently, which are 3 oz. three times a day if you wish to improve your health and 3 oz. twice a day if your goal is maintenance of health.

If there are any other change that you notice while taking Essiac, it will be hard to know if it's Essiac causing it or something else. That being said, if you are concerned with how your body is responding and adjusting, feel free to start low and go slow. Everyone's body is different.

You may choose to start with as little as 1 oz. once a day and eventually build up to 3 oz. three times per day. Everyone is different, and that method might work better for you. Rest assured the average person does not experience Essiac tea side effects and normally starting at the full serving works fine for most people. Please consult with your healthcare provider if you are unsure.
