Dr. Joe Brown, naturopathic physician

by Dr. Joe Brown, N.M.D. - Licensed Medical Physician

I went straight from high school into college with the goal of helping people. I did not yet know what profession I would pursue until I was diagnosed with advanced cancer at 22 years old while completing my undergraduate studies. I took two years away from school while undergoing treatment and navigating an extremely difficult prognosis.

My family and I began searching for additional ways to support my health, even though we did not know who to call, where to look, or what to do. During that time, I learned about naturopathic and complementary medicine, nutrition, supplements, supportive therapies, juicing, and other lifestyle practices. Prayer and my Christian faith were also important parts of my personal journey.

Over time, follow-up bloodwork and medical evaluations reflected positive changes in my health. My personal experience with cancer and recovery had a profound impact on me and ultimately shaped the direction of my education and career.

That experience showed me who I wanted to become and how I wanted to serve others. I viewed it as God’s way of revealing the path I was meant to follow. Many people spend their lives searching for their purpose. Looking back, I believe this experience helped establish mine.

I returned to university and completed my bachelor’s degree in Biology. I took an accelerated course load with an emphasis on premedical studies and graduated Cum Laude with honors from Arizona State University.

I then attended the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and Health Sciences, a four-year accredited naturopathic medical school in Arizona. During medical school, I served as Class President for approximately a year and a half. I was later elected Student Government President and served as a liaison between the student body, faculty, and administration.

Upon graduation, I received several awards and honors. These included a Leadership Scholarship, a Community Involvement Award, a monetary leadership award, a Certification of Appreciation for serving as an Alumni Association Ambassador, and an Outstanding Leadership Award presented by the president of the medical school.

My personal cancer history became an important part of my professional focus while I was still in medical school. I participated in intravenous and injection-related educational programs and gained experience working alongside other healthcare professionals as part of my clinical education.

Why I Do What I Do

“I felt called to open my practice because there were people facing serious health challenges who needed education, support, and compassionate care. Having once faced cancer myself, I wanted to use my experience and education to give back to others.”

I was offered several professional opportunities before graduating from medical school. After receiving my degree and license, I ultimately chose to establish my own practice.

During my third- and fourth-year clinical rotations, I gained experience in hospitals, clinics, and medical settings throughout Arizona. Physicians familiar with my personal cancer story and my interest in supporting people with complex health concerns allowed me to participate in a variety of clinical and educational opportunities.

After opening my office, I began working with patients from throughout the United States and other countries. Over the years, individuals from throughout the United States and several other countries have visited my practice to learn about my educational approach and naturopathic services.

In addition to seeing patients, I have lectured throughout the community and received recognition for outreach and service. Channel 3 television presented me with the Spirit Award, and 104.7 FM radio presented me with the Kiss a Hero Award.

Banner Del E. Webb provided a plaque and thank-you letter recognizing my speaking and outreach work with the hospital, including my participation in its Third Annual Breast Health Fair.

The Melonhead Foundation, a nonprofit organization supporting families of children diagnosed with cancer, provided a thank-you letter recognizing my charitable involvement, educational support, and participation in fundraising events, silent auctions, and raffles.

I was also invited to participate in charitable events and silent auctions organized by a nonprofit associated with the owners of Disneyland in recognition of my community involvement.
